To do it properly you need to undo the driveshaft nut, the bottom balljoint ect and completely remove the whole hub assembly to work on it at a bench.

    Wheel Bearings?

How do you change the wheel bearing in a 1999 ford Escort front wheel drive,is it easy or are they pressed on and have to be serviced somewhere.Wheel Bearings?Well you need the special tools to do the work. Such as a big inpack wrench. A Slap-hammper with wheel adapter to put the fub apart. Bearing puller. And the proper tools to put it back together. Otherwise the drive axle could damage. And you need the tools to remoce the races. And installing tool or a press with the proper dies. The are best done in a shop with right tools. There are some model you hap to replace whole unit. The there is a real safety question. Cause you hap to take presure off the a fram.Wheel Bearings?if i'm not mistaken, the front end bearings are part of the hubs, meaning that they are pressed in the hubs. U have to remove the rotors, and also remove the steering knuckles. then send the steering knucles to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced.Wheel Bearings?Hydraulic press is needed.

How to change 02 f-150 front wheel bearings?

i noticed a kind of humming noise coming from the front of the truck, my gut reaction is its the bearings going out. if i remember correctly its a pretty straight forward process.

    1. remove wheel

    2. remove caliper

    3. remove the bearing cap

    4. remove the spindle nut

    5. remove rotor and replace bearings

pretty sure thats the sum of it, but do any you need any special tools? its been a while since i've done any bearing work and now i at college at my tool arsenal is basically limited to a 100 or so piece craftsman set.How to change 02 f-150 front wheel bearings? You'll need a brass punch.

The oil seals %26amp; bearings come out easy enough but use the brass punch to knock out the races. The new bearings will come with new races.

An arbor press is best to press in the new races but you can use the brass punch and carefully tap them in making sure they go in straight and evenly as you gently tap all around them in. Take your time and make sure the races are bottomed out. Pack bearing grease into the bearings before installing them.

Hope this helps. How to change 02 f-150 front wheel bearings?no special tools is required,a good socket set channel lock players or the right size wrench to remove the spindle nut,tap out the rear bearing cap to remove the rear bearing, you should also replace the bearing race in the router, repack the bearings with a good bearing grease then replace router.make sure you tightened the spindle nut to the right specks, not too tight or loose.also replace a new cotter pin.

You are going to be in for a big suprise. That is not an easy job.

Those bearings are pressed into the hub assembly, and will require you to completely reove the hubs from the car. This is going to include removal of the brake calipers, CV shafts, Struts, (disconnected from the hub at the top), the ball joint removed from the bottom. And the steering end links to your Rack and Pinion.

Now that is not the interesting part. You then get to reinstall all of that, then head down to an alignment shop and have your wheels re-aligned.

The new bearings are not super expensive, but they will require being pressed into the hub after the old ones are removed. Its not the parts that are the expensive part, its the labor, plus the alignment.

A word of caution. Remember the front suspension is under spring tension, so if you don't have the proper strut compressor, things are going to get a little exciting.

I would recommend that you let a shop that is properly equipped deal with this job. Should one of those springs cut loose while you are working under there, you might have a little extra Iron in your diet you weren't counting on.

    %26quot;Frodo of the Nine Fingered and the Sp-ring of Doom.%26quot;

I have a close friend who lost his finger to such an accident, and I had to rush him to the ER. Needless to say, after that event, I let the shops handle that work.

I hope I helped you out!

Good LuckCan anyone tell me how to change my front wheel bearings for my 93 toyota paseo?detailed if poss.?Quite a straight forward job and if you are equipped with power tools should be over by 2 hours.

Cost about $200 to change both bearings and include replacement charge.

Suggest get it replace by the workshop. Can anyone tell me how to change my front wheel bearings for my 93 toyota paseo?detailed if poss.?auto zone senior diagnostician.....LMAOCan anyone tell me how to change my front wheel bearings for my 93 toyota paseo?detailed if poss.?Your biggest obstacle is going to be the shop press. You are not going to have one and it would cost you more than the value of your car to get one.

You will need a 30 mm socket and appropriate drive tool to remove the axle nut, a 17 mm socket to remove the brake caliper assy from the steering knuckle, also the strut bolts that hold it to the knuckle are the same size, dikes to pull the cotter pin from the tie rod fastener. After the tie rod fastener is off this is where the hammer comes in. A few sharp blows to the part of the knuckle where the tie rod goes into will pop the tie rod out. Be careful to not hit the tie rod end threads or else you are going for a new one. Then 3 bolts hold the lower control arm to the knuckle 14 or 17 mm. Take that out and you are almost there.

This is the part where you may want to go to a shop before hand and ask them if they would install the bearings for you. If you can find a taker, you are in business. They will put your bearings in for you and all you will have to do is re-assemble the thing.

You will not be able to remove the bearings on your own. They are easily pressed in and out, so let the shop do this unless you know someone who has access to a press and could do you a favor. There is a seal kit you will need for each bearing that are a little difficult to install with out the proper tools and a seal driver kit can set you back some dough.

If you want to have a shop do it, should be in the ballpark of 3.5-4 labor hours and about 100-120 bucks for parts to do both sides.

There is also the issue of the actual hub being worn which is a possibility. The hub is actually the part that has your wheel studs on it. If the bearings are excessively worn you may need to replace one or both of these. These will run you about 100 dollars each new if needed. Can anyone tell me how to change my front wheel bearings for my 93 toyota paseo?detailed if poss.?all the people are right ,you need a shop with a press to do it. I usually strip it down and take it to the shop to let them press it and they usually only charge about 25 to do it. Front wheel drive bearings are just to hard to get out without a press.

    Changing wheel bearing?? help pls:)?

hey id like to change both the wheel bearings on the front of my holden barina 2008. can someone point me in a direction and how much are they usually. im from australia :)Changing wheel bearing?? help pls:)?I believe your car is front wheel drive based on the Daewoo.Loosen both front wheels jack the car up,support the body with blocks or trestles and remove the jack.Slacken the big nut on the end of the CV Joint.Remove the brake calliper (no need to disconnect the hydraulic brake pipe, just support the calliper)..Undo the track rod end and the top and bottom ball joint nuts and break the tapered connections.Remove the CV joint nut and tap the CV joint back through the hub and remove the hub.On a bench and in a vice remove the bearing by using a steel drift to knock out the inner tracks.Refit the new bearings by using a phosphorous bronze drift if you don't have a press. You can use the old tracks to start the bearing in the hub and then evenly tap the bearing home.Refitting is a reversal of removalChanging wheel bearing?? help pls:)?if it is front wheel drive it is not a do-it-yourself job as it needs a 15 ton press to get the old bearings off and the new ones on, if it is rear wheel drive then the bearings are adjustable but you still need a press to get the old race off and the new one on, there is no way a 2008 car would need new bearings unless something catastrophic has happened, they last 160000KmChanging wheel bearing?? help pls:)?unless you are a mechanic, its better to pay for someone to do it for you, and car bearings and semi expensive, labor generally isnt, but they usually go by hour so its up to you. srry this isnt really helpful, but ive done bearings on a couple things other than cars, and its tuff.

  • I put a new front wheel bearing on my car, now i'm getting 1/2 the MPG i was. Could i have tightened it too mu?

Nothing else changed on the car. as soon as i was done with the bearing, the car went from getting almost 300 miles a tank to 200. So from 30mpg to 20mpg. I'm thinking it's gotta be the problem. But i don't know how this could be. You can't tighten a bearing too much being that it's pressed in, it's a fixed piece. I'm wondering if it's a bum bearing. am i wrong?I put a new front wheel bearing on my car, now i'm getting 1/2 the MPG i was. Could i have tightened it too mu?Anything is possible but not this...........

If it were too tight it would heat your wheel / hub / caliper changing color and burn-out the bearing causing ..smoke.......dripping greese....not cause a decrease in MPGI put a new front wheel bearing on my car, now i'm getting 1/2 the MPG i was. Could i have tightened it too mu?what kind of car. if it,s the kind of bearing that you adjust then it,s possible that you could have gotten it too tight. if it is then you will burn the bearing up. if the bearing is pressed into the hub then it,s factory pressed.I put a new front wheel bearing on my car, now i'm getting 1/2 the MPG i was. Could i have tightened it too mu?No a wheel bearing will not cause a decrease in mileage. You have another problem somewhere under the hood. www.advanceautoparts.comWhere can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost?Auto parts stores used to carry those things. Try the autoparts store first. If they don't have it, you can remove the old bearing and bring it in to a bearing distributer's customer service desk. They probably carry them.

If all else fails, go to the Honda dealer parts department. The bearing will cost more, ($50?) but you will probabaly get the right part the first time.

Replacing the front wheel bearing requires removing the wheel, then the brake caliper must be lossened and relocated, then remove the brake rotor. Then you must remove the wheel hub, which requires a large metric socket that most shade tree mechanics don't have.

This will expose the bearing. The bearing must be pulled from the hub using a bearing puller. Then replaced.

When you put everything back together, make sure you get the torque settings right, especially the nut that holds the wheel hub in place.Where can i buy a replacement wheel bearing for a 2001 honda civic? and how much do they cost? This bearing must be pressed out, and the new one in, with special service tools. Your cheapest option is to grab a complete steering knuckle from a salvage yard. Try to be sure the car wasn't hit on that side and spin the hub briskly while holding the knuckle: if you hear/feel grinding, the bearing's no good. If you're handy, you can swap the knuckle yourself. Just be sure to torque the axle nut correctly, or you'll harm the bearing. How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?

I've changed the front wheel bearings on my front drive rabbit but wonder if it isn't easier on a GP. Are the bearings attached via a flange around the perimeter of the bearing ? Do they need to be pressed out and new ones pressed in ?

Thanks,How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?Its a sealed hub/bearing assembly. The entire hub is replaced as a unit.

Remove the wheel and tire, remove the brake caliper and rotor, remove the CV axle nut, disconnect the ABS sensor wire, un-bolt the hub assembly from the back, attach slide hammer to front of hub assembly and whack away. Disconnecting the ball joint may give you more room to play. Installation is of course the reverse (without the slide hammer).

How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?No they do not need pressed, they are a sealed bearing unit. There are retaining bolts around a flange, I believe there are three of them. Once you buy the bearings at the parts store you will see what I am talking about. It's an entire hub assembly with the bearing and lugs, etc. Take your caliper, caliper bracket, rotor, and axle nut off. The axle will will slide out of the splined hub, and then you simply unbolt it and unplug ABS if applicable. Its not hard to do at all, I've done a lot of them at work, I'm a mechanic. Good Luck! How do you change the front wheels bearings on a 2004 Grand Prix ?You'll need to take the rotor and caliper off to be sure. If there are fasteners, then you're in business, otherwise the knuckles will have to be pulled off and the old bearing pressed out at a machine shop.

How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?

I bought a honda civic coupe recently .

yesterday i was driving my mom back from work , and as i was parking , i turned my wheels and i could hear a screeching or shreiking sound coming from the Right Front Wheels .

i did some research on Yahoo answers and it seems that

this could have been a defective wheel bearing or a cv joint .

i called the service center and the manager told me it could be the mud thing making that sound , and he adviced me to check tire pressure . So i did and seemed the air pressure was low on the Right front wheel and put some air in . But the sound didn't %26quot;go away%26quot; . it sounds like 2 thin metal pieces sliding each other ( it's a high pitched shreiking/ screeching sound) i dn't understand what's going on . I dn't have a job right now , looking for a job , should i take it to the honda service center where i bought it ( will it be covered ) , or any service center ...

I was wondering if that exactly is the problem , and how much will it cost me to fix itHow much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?I don't think is the cv joints or the bearings, since the bearings will sound (while you're driving) like you are driving a pick-up truck with huge wheels on it, (you know the sound they make)

And if it's the cv joints it will only and ONLY when you turn to either side (clack, clack, clack noise), if it's screeching noise it's the brake pads, check to see if the disks are smooth, that could be the problem, if they 're not change the pads, that should fix the problem!, BUT if they tell you to change the cv joints it's about $70 labor, plus the parts, each side, if you don;t have the money just tell them that you want the affected side (even though the Honda service they'll try to tell you you need to do both) DO ONLY THE ONE, then when you have the money do the other one, i don't think is the bearings...

But whatever you do don't take to the dealer it's gonna cost you a lot!!!, if it's not under warranty off-course.

What you can do to make sure it's not the cv-joints is this:

Turn the wheels to one side and look inside (the other side where you put the nuts that hold the tire) and you'll see a large piece of rubber like a cup, that's called the %26quot;boot%26quot; they'll have a metal ring that holds it in place, if that's loose or you see grease all over it, that's the problem, but like i said before i think is your brake pads. GOOD LUCK!!!How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?Replace wheel bearings...cheap - CV Joints...very expensive, Tonto! How much does it cost to change wheel bearings / Cv Joint ?If it's under warranty, you ought to be covered. It sounds more like a wheel bearing than the CV joint.

Check the rubber boot between the wheel and the transaxle. Look around the boot as well. These things can get a hole and throw grease out. Look for a pattern of grease around the boot. If there is a hole, yes it's the CV joint and it' gonna be expensive. I've never done a Honda CV, but you're looking at $350 +

How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?

I am pretty much a diy guy for everything. I slid my car into a curb a long time ago and replaced a lot of parts. Unfortunately my wheel bearing was off, and caused the front passenger wheel to go completely bald down to wires. I, like a fool, decided maybe it would be good to have a %26quot;professional%26quot; that a friend referred me to handle this one. I like doing my own work so that I know what all I did, and I can usually trace it back. This guy was very unprofessional, called me angrily saying he needed more money because apparently the half-shaft for an automatic is different than a manual (my car). He said that would need to be replaced, and a spindle (which should've came with it, as it came from a junkyard). Anyways, I continued this foolish game. When it was all finally done, he brought the car to me (the shop was just down the street), and I drove him home. I noticed the wheel was making a rubbing noise, and he said it was nothing, and it should go away. I drove it around for a while, but I have a different car that I had been driving instead (the a/c works). Months later, I decided to drive the saturn around and it is still making this rubbing noise. One of the motor mounts had been rotted, and I replaced it, which helped a lot, but the wheel is still making this rubbing noise. I am pretty sure it is not rubbing against anything, but it is hard to tell because the %26quot;professional%26quot; put the tire back on with an impact wrench and I can't get the wheel off. Any ideas? If it is the wheel bearing...how would I replace it? I believe they are sealed bearings, but I'm not sure if it needs to be pressed out or if I could hammer it out and a new one in.How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?if your going to change the bearing, i,ll tell you the way i do it. i pound the old bearing out and i put the new bearing in the freezer and when i,am ready for it, it will slip right in. steel will shrink when they are cold and expand when it warms up. buy the bearing, put it in the freezer for about a day or 2, pound the bearing out, take the new bearing and put it in a ice chest and when your ready for it, it should slip right in where the old 1 came out. i did that several times. How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?Buy a repair manual for the car and do what it says.

Oh yes, the four bolts you mention should be the holding bolts for the strut assembly, that's where it actually attaches to the suspension.

  • Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?

I have a 1999 Sunfire with a 2.2 engine automatic transmission. The front driver wheel bearing/hub is beginning to squeal - How hard is this to change? Is there any specific information that I need to know before doing it?Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question? The front hub assm. is very easy to change. After getting the wheel off remove the spindle nut (the large nut in the center of the hub). The disconnect the ABS wires ( if equiped). Now the only thing left is to remove the mounting bolts. You must be carful when reinstalling the mounting bolts because if the bolts are over tightened the backing plate will crush the bearing and before you know it you will be replacing it all over again.Front Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?not hard, you should clean the rust off the knuckle before installing new one and watch out for wheel speed sensor if equiped, you might have to remove it but thats not a big dealFront Hub/Wheel Bearing on 1999 Pontiac Sunfire Question?First of all usually the Hub doesn't make a squealing noise, should sound like a low humming at first then becomes a louder grinding noise...Do these test for me...whichever wheel you think it is...jack it up and see if you can move the tire from side to side or either up and down...if the hub is bad the tire will feel loose...If it is OK, the the squeal might be coming from your brake pads..You have a wear indicator that lets you know it is time to change your brake pads..Look for grooves cut into you rotor...If you need more help email me back..

How do I break a wheel-bearing hub free from steering knuckle?

Need to change a front wheel-bearing on a 97 Chevy Cavalier. The bearing is in a pre-assembled hub. I removed the three bolts holding the hub to the steering knuckle but couldn't get the bearing out because it seemed to be rusted in there. I tried using Seafoam (rust remover) and that didn't seem to change anything... and I have pretty well pried and hammered at it with small tools. What would a shop use to get it off? Please be specific if you know... like the name of tools or equipment and possibly where I can get them or rent them. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?

It is on the front passenger side and i have aftermarket lockin hubs put on a year ago. There seems to be a rubbing noise coming from that side and when i lock in the four wheel drive it gets worse any ideas? How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?Sometimes the manual locking hubs can make noise. My warns were making more of a clicking sound and I look the lock ring off the outside of the outer axle and this took care of the noise. That ring is not really necessary because, for there to be a problem the axle would have to slide out a full 6 inches to disengage the hub, if this happens you have something far worse to worry about. A bearing noise will be a rough or %26quot;roar%26quot; noise at approx. 30mph and up. It may seem to go away at higher speeds, but it is usually masked by wind and tire noise. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?it would be a good idea to take your hub apart, see how much dirt and debree is inside, when you lock the hub in it moves internaly, and may be grinding up dirt. How Can I tell if my front wheel bearing is bad on a 1992 ford explorer and how do i change it?to check a wheel beering jack the vehicle up so the tire is off the ground put a jack stand under vehicle for safety grab the tire one hand on top one hand on the bottom rock the tire if you have play in the wheel then you need to check out wheel bearing(don't rock tire side to side).Take apart hub inspect the hub assembly also inspect the axle

Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?

I need to commandeer my dads 91 Jetta. Apparently, the left had side front wheel bearing went out and it needs to be replaced. Also, the struts are bad but I'm focusing on the wheel bearing for now.

My question is, how difficult is it to change the wheel bearing out? I am fairly proficient with cars.. Bascily, how long will it take?Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?here is a repair guide that tell how!

    http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG

have fun!Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta? The part that will be difficult for you is that you need to press the hub out of the bearing using a press. And press the old bearing out of the knuckle after that. A lot of times the hub is so badly pitted that if you install it into a new bearing there will still be excessive movement. Then your really screwed because you have to press it all back apart again, and this process ruins your new bearing you just installed. So if the hub looks hammered at all the first time, replace it, before installing it and finding out its bad too.

So basically you can remove the knuckle yourself, then take the assembly to a place that has a press, and when their done, put the knuckle back in yourself.

Also, you are doing half the work of replacing the struts, by taking out the knuckle. But then your going to need to find a place that has a spring compressor so you can swap strut assemblies. I would suggest replacing the bearing on the top of the strut assembly during that process. They go bad frequently, and yours will probably fall apart when you take the strut assembly apart. Is it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?front wheel drive easy to replace whole axle and just as cheap as a bearing and many cases its the only way to do it not too hard and dont mess with the strut unless your sure of what your doing very deady if not done rightIs it difficult to change out a wheel bearing on a 91 Jetta?Roughly about 2 hr. I have a rear-wheel drive car, so I dont know how much different it is, but the only thing I found difficult was that the bolt is quite tight and it helps to have a very large socket wrench or a breaker bar. Can anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing?

olds alero 2.4 1999 model,,any help will do ,annoying sound when driving and when turning right its fine but when moving straight i heard the sound again,,,im thingkin of wheel bearing,,TYCan anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing? If you turn the wheel while driving and the noise changes, yes, I agree, its probably a wheel bearing, which is sold as a hub assembly. Be best to have someone diagnosis it for you to make sure what side its coming from, as they are expensive and you might not want to do both if only one is bad. Costs can vary, labor is usually around 100 dollars and the part can be around 150-250, per side, depending on the quality of the part, remember, cheaper isn't always better. I agree, if you decide to do it in yourself, it would be a lot cheaper, but shops like all businesses mark-up the part , selling parts at cost will put a shop out of business real quick, Good luckCan anybody know how much it will cost me to change my both front wheel bearing?Front wheel bearing jobs for that car could run about $300 parts and labor for one side. You can purchase new wheel bearings for the front at http://mibearings.com/paypalparts/513137

    They are $84 a piece.

Labor (unless you are going to do it yourself) is from $70 to $150 an hour and it generally takes about an hour for one bearing.

In the front is a section on %26quot;Troubleshooting%26quot; that guides you step-by-step to find causes of most engine malfunctions based on the car's symptoms. db667089 says: you can check http://www.alldatadiy.com. For about the same price as a Haynes or Chilton's repair manual, you can have online access (for a whole year) to model specific info for your particular vehicle. This is the same info that repair shops use. They have great wiring schematics/diagrams.

Also, for about $15 for a one-month subscription, you can get the factory manual, downloadable (careful! Mine was about 500 pages!) or viewable, at http://eAutoRepair.com.

Also, many people recommend autozone.com's free online manuals.

I need to change the front wheel bearing on a 95 Ford four wheel drive. How do I get the hub assembly apart?

Bear with me its been a year and a half since I did this.

Truck jacked up and tire off.

    remove hub 3-6 bolts

    pull off outer cap

there is a large spring clip in a groove in outer hub wall . Dig around with small screw driver you will find .it once this is out the inner hub will come out.

You may need to reach in and remove any c-clips on Axel . As well as a large washer with holes in it .

Now you should see a large flat washer looking thing with 4 hole in it. Get you hub socket and remove it . The rotor and hub should pull off.

remove seal and bearings . Pound out races with brass /wood drift and replace in reverse.

When you get to the large 4 hole nut tighten till rotor will not turn and back off. I put tire on and tighten till there is no side to side movement . And tire turns. You will want to check hub after first ride to see if to hot and readjust in week or so .

Excellent investment and learning/teaching tool. How do I change the front wheel bearing on a '98 Vauxhall Corsa?it would made it a lot easier if you bought the hub with the bearing already in it but since you already got the bearing you have to remove the hub and have the old 1 pressed in and the new 1 pressed in.How do I change the front wheel bearing on a '98 Vauxhall Corsa? You won't have to worry about grease because it is a sealed bearing. You will have to have the bearing pressed out. You can save yourself some money by taking the hub assembly off the car and taking it and the new bearing into a shop and having the old bearing pressed out and the new one pressed in. You have to take all the brake hardware off the hub, then the tie rod, It would be best if you use spring compressors if not be very carefull of the spring pressure, then jack the hub assembly up from the bottom of the hub so you can get the ball joint disconnected from the bottom of the hub (if you don't have the spring compressed here the pressure will push the jack towards the outside of the car as soon as the ball joint is released). After that you will have to remove the top nut on the front strut which holds the assembly into the top of the fender well. After you get this all disconnected take the whole assembly and get the new bearing pressed in. Assembly in reverse. If you don't take out the whole assembly you will have to have the front end aligned when you are done.
